Atlas Serif

The slab serif of the family. It starts from Atlas Sans's drawings and adds square, unbracketed slabs, softened by the same corners as the rest of the atlas. Built for headlines, signs, and any page that wants a little more weight on the ground.

Slabs, beaks, and open rounds

Unbracketed slabs
Slabs are plain rectangles laid across the stem ends, with no brackets. They pick up the same 10-unit corner radius as every other line in the family, so they read firm without feeling sharp.
Head serifs that lead
On lowercase stems the head serif reaches a little further than the feet, nudging the eye along the line.
Beaks on the arms
E, F, L, T, and Z finish their arms with short vertical beaks, and so does the lowercase z, so the letters keep their footing at display sizes.
Open rounds
The round letters, like o, c, e, s, and their capitals, skip the slabs and widen by four to five percent to balance the serifed stems beside them.
Tabular figures
Every figure sits on a 600-unit advance. The 1 and 4 stand on slabs of their own, and the 7 carries a beak.
One skeleton, three fonts
Cap height 660 and x-height 490, the same as Atlas Sans and Atlas Mono, so all three can share a line.

Mapping a typeface, one glyph at a time

Every letter in Atlas Serif starts as an Atlas Sans drawing. The generator squeezes it to a new width, then lays slabs across the stem ends.

To rebuild the glyphs and render a proof, run the build script with an output path:
